Frequently Asked Questions
How much fiber do I actually need per day?
The standard Dietary Reference Intake is 38 grams per day for men aged 19 to 50 (30 grams for men 51 and older), and 25 grams per day for women aged 19 to 50 (21 grams for women 51 and older). Most adults fall well short of these targets.
Is there another way to estimate my fiber needs?
Yes. Many nutrition guidelines also suggest roughly 14 grams of fiber for every 1000 calories consumed. If you know your daily calorie target, our Daily Calorie and BMR Calculator can help you estimate it, and you can cross-check that figure against the age and sex based recommendation, using whichever is higher.
Why does the fiber recommendation decrease after age 50?
The recommendation decreases slightly with age mainly because calorie needs tend to decrease, not because fiber becomes less important. Adequate fiber remains valuable for digestive and metabolic health at every age.
What is the difference between soluble and insoluble fiber?
Soluble fiber dissolves in water and can help manage blood sugar and cholesterol levels. Insoluble fiber adds bulk and supports regular digestion. Most whole food sources contain a mix of both, so eating a variety of plant foods matters more than tracking the two types separately.
